Long distance relationships everywhere and yes..all of them working.. here in my country Pakistan and I'm sure this is the story of every other developing country. Most of the educated men belonging to rural areas have a long distance relationship with their wives.
Let me tell you my story. When my parents and I decided that I should marry someone reasonable we started meeting people looking for proposals, there came a proposal. It was from a village and my parents live in Lahore. My mother talked to his father over the phone. My father in law to be said that his wife is also from Lahore and living in the village after the wedding so their daughter in law must do the same and live in the village. My mother clearly said no. My husband, an engineer, was working in Faisalabad, a large city of Pakistan. My point of view was that if we should get married then it is for to live with the person, not with his family. Which is very natural by the way. So then afterwards they accepted our condition and contacted again and so I got married to this, admirable person. At first, I went to the village, I was supposed to shift with my husband after few days of the wedding but that few days came after a whole year because of the resistance from his father. Now that day and until today they can't accept the fact that I am living with my husband and not in the in-laws, especially my mother in law.
This is not the story of every other home there, women do not live with their husbands. If the man is educated there is no way that he can get a job in the rural area, so he has to come to the city. In many cases, men do their jobs in cities and visit their families on the weekend, after a fortnight or after months, depending on the distance. This seems insane to me. There is a woman in our village who is living in Pakistan and her husband lives abroad right from the beginning and it's been like fifteen years and she is happy because she gets the money. It simply means that you have no regard for feelings. Many women live like this, in a long distance relationship and there is a significant ratio of late pregnancies i.e. trying to make babies for so long but in vain, because of the chances of conception getting low due to the absence of dear hubby. An aunt of my husband lived in a long distance relationship for thirteen years. Her husband visited her every fortnight and they loved each other too.
Women do not demand to be with their spouses because they are taught that way, they consider serving their in-laws an obligation. Which is not. Only obligation comes with marriage is to be with the spouse and live with him making a family. Lack of education and exposure gives these women a narrow spectrum of thinking in which they can only think of cooking and cleaning and yeah buying new dresses, making heaps of those.
Men usually feel shame in expressing their love for their wives. Still in the 21st century. They do not experience love their whole lives considering it a forbidden fruit. Which clearly it is not... then what are these people doing?? they are lessening for them the joys of life nature has gifted mankind.
The problem lies in the total absence of job opportunities in the rural areas, low wages i.e. poverty and lack of education and exposure.
